TL;DR — Fastest Method

Open QR Code Reader & Generator → tap the floating scan button on Home → choose Scan from Photos → tap your screenshot. Works on web links, Wi-Fi QR codes, vCards, colored QR codes, and 1D/2D barcodes.

Method 1: Scan Any Screenshot or Photo with QR Code Reader & Generator (Most Reliable)

Unlike Apple's built-in Photos viewer—which only triggers on simple web-link QR codes—QR Code Reader & Generator uses both Apple CoreImage and a fallback ZXing optical decoder to extract any QR code or 1D/2D barcode from an image.

  1. Open QR Code Reader & Generator on your iPhone

Launch QR Code Reader & Generator (free on the App Store) and stay on the Home tab.

  2. Tap the Scan button and choose 'Scan from Photos'

Tap the floating blue scan button in the bottom-right corner of the Home screen, then tap 'Scan from Photos' in the action sheet.

  3. Select your screenshot or photo

Pick the image containing the QR code or barcode from your Photo Library. The app decodes the image immediately using its dual CoreImage + ZXing engine.

  4. Inspect and use the decoded result

Review the full URL, Wi-Fi password, contact card, or barcode text on the result screen, then tap Open, Copy, or Share. The scan is automatically saved in your Home history.

Method 2: Using iOS Live Text in the Apple Photos App (Basic Web Links Only)

If the screenshot contains a standard black-and-white website QR code and you are running iOS 15 or later:

  1. Open the Photos app and tap the screenshot.
  2. Touch and hold your finger directly on the QR code square for 1–2 seconds, or tap the Live Text icon in the bottom-right corner first.
  3. If iOS recognizes the code, a context menu appears with Open in Safari or Copy Link.
When Live Text fails: If nothing happens when you long-press the QR code in Photos, it usually means the code encodes plain text, a vCard contact, a 1D/PDF417 barcode, or uses custom colors/logos. Use Method 1 above or try our free in-browser QR scanner.
Why doesn't long-pressing a QR code in Apple Photos work sometimes?

iOS Live Text in the Photos app only recognizes standard high-contrast QR codes that contain web links or basic actions. It frequently ignores 1D barcodes (UPC, EAN, Code 128), PDF417 codes, stylized/colored QR codes, or plain-text payloads. QR Code Reader & Generator decodes all of them.

Can I scan a QR code from a photo offline without internet?

Yes. Decoding runs 100% locally on your iPhone. You only need an internet connection if you choose to open a decoded website URL in your browser.
